In describing this map to me, RoMeK said something to the effect of "it's the tallest volcanic mountain on Mars, so I thought Ultor would be doing some weird shit up there."
Setting a map in a real-world location to be honest is something I hadn't at all considered when deciding what I wanted to make for RFU6 - it's a really cool idea, and one that RoMeK has executed on very well. Playing Olympus Mons definitely feels like you're atop a large volcanic mountain. From the subtle deep rumbling ambient sound to the dust below creating a kind of volumetric fog effect, this map has a hell of a lot of atmosphere. Also, I'm somewhat of a sucker for impressive organic Martian brushwork, and this map has that in spades. I would have liked to have seen some low poly terrain off in the distance just to further illustrate that you're way the hell up, but that doesn't take away anything from the map. Maybe it's just a really foggy day. On the gameplay side, this map could definitely benefit from some additional items being scattered around (armor and ammo, mainly), as well as an alternate route into the base that's not fully visible to base defenders. The lack of armors and extreme visibility of all the routes makes it effectively impossible to cap a flag if the defending team is paying attention. The result is basically all combat happening in mid. The map quickly turns from CTF into basically a TDM match in the center. It's a shame, because the base is damn cool from both a layout and an aesthetic perspective, and not much combat ever happens there (because very few people make it through mid). I'd really love to see a version of this map that has at least one route not going straight up in front of the base, and has some more items - especially armors. Great work here, RoMeK! Visually, Olympus Mons is absolutely one of my favorite maps. With a few tweaks and optimizations, it could fit that bill on gameplay as well. |

Probably the first map ever to feature an actual Mars location name that is taller than Mt. Everest. Map itself its sort of like Badlands with Facing Worlds, however the fight ends up in the middle the map making it impossible cap when playing with too many people, but there's still alternative tunnels around idk. Great job Romek!
