Miners Escape is the best first map I've seen in a long, long time. Most first maps are simply a [url=https://www.factionfiles.com/ff.php?action=file&id=282]bunch of misaligned boxes with bad textures and ridiculous piles of items everywhere[/url] - Redalex didn't do that. Instead, he's created a coherent if basic CTF layout that's entirely playable. That in and of itself is awesome to see, and that's without even mentioning what I think is the most impressive aspect of this map.
With this map, Redalex became the only RFU6 author to attempt an entirely different visual style between bases. The layout is (mostly) symmetrical, but he's taken a page out of the Team Fortress 2 playbook and visually themed the blue base using industrial and cold metal textures, while the red base is a dank and dirty Martian cave. I would have liked to have seen this concept expanded on a little, but all things considered he did a good job, even setting aside this being his first map. Great work here Redalex. You've got a bright future in RF level design for certain, and I for one cannot wait to see what you come up with down the road. |
