If you had to guess.
Including mods and rapid fire.
Including shotgun shells, but excluding explosives...
How many rounds of ammunition have been fired in the PC online multiplayer of Red Faction since its release.
Does anyone have even a ballpark worthy formula of estimating this?

I would say probably the AR. It's used by most players and a lot of them use either that or the shotgun.

I would say so too, the AR.
Personally for me it would be the HMG for sure and likely followed by the sniper.
I put the AR at the bottom of my weapon priority for most of my RF days due to it having some register? damage? issues before modded servers became the norm which fixed that, I still don't know what the real problem was but it was so weak for some reason that the pistol out did it but it did work perfect in single player.

??? Not sure what you mean by that, but the only registration issues I'm aware of were hitbox-related, not specific to any weapon.

Yeah it was a constant issue with the AR regardless of server or PC hardware.
The only time the issue went away was when hosting a sever yourself. But these days with modded servers it seems ok, it only applied to the original RF versions and plain servers
There still exists the one with the shield to this day, had no to almost no effect on opponent damage unless you host, that is even if the player is just standing still. I used to host my own servers for my mates and I would always get them with the shield only fights and they all got 0 kills
They didn't know of the bug.
As for hitbox related issues the rail gun scope misalignment still exists, you need to aim off to the right of a player to get a kill (glancing the player) direct center hit rarely kills.

the rail can definitely be a little weird but i'm fairly confident the issues you were experiencing are down to something else (maybe input lag, packetloss, something)
the AR was more or less always solid for me on a variety of servers, connections and setups
the left click is pretty hard to land tho and mostly useless
modded servers typically wouldn't affect the netcode in any major way but do usually tweak the weapons to make the game insanely easy
